About Us:

                                                            -  OUR STORY -

AS A WELCOME WAGON HOSTESS IN 1965, ELINOR HAMILTON ENJOYED GOING TO THEIR NEWSCOMERS'

LUNCHEONS.  SHE THOUGHT HOW NICE IT WOULD BE FOR UPLAND TO HAVE A NEWCOMERS' ORGANIZATION.

THIS IDEA DID NOT MATERIALIZE UNTIl ELINOR MET RUTH STRUEVE, WHO HAD RECENTLY MOVED TO UPLAND.

THEY WERE LONELY AND REALIZED THERE MUST BE OTHER NEWCOMERS IN THE SAME POSITION.  THEY FELT

IT WOULD BE NICE TO GET TOGETHER TO FORM NEW BRIDGE GROUPS AND ATTEND FRIEND-MAKING

LUNCHEONS.  SO, WITH A NUCLEUS OF THREE, MEMBERSHIPS WERE SOLICITED THROUGH WORD-OF-MOUTH

AND NEWSPAPER ADVERTISEMENTS.
THE FIRST ORGANIZATIONAL COFFEE MET FEBRUARY 16, 1965.  THOSE ATTENDING WERE RUTH AND ELINOR,

PATTIE HUMMEL, DOROTHY MILLER, KATHLEEN SCHNUR, MARGARETTE BOETCHER, BETTY SCHMIT AND

BIRDIE WYLEN.  THE FOUNDERS KNEWTHE LONELINESS OF MOVING INTO A NEW CITY AND THAT THERE

WOULD BE MORE NEWCOMERS TO COME.  IN 1969, THE GROUP VOTED TO DROP ITS AFFILIATION WITH

WELCOME WAGON AND BECAME AN INDEPENDENT SOCIAL CLUB FOR RESIDENTS IN UPLAND, KNOWN AS THE

NEW UPLANDERS.  THE IDEA OF A SOCIAL CLUB WITH A PHILANTHROPIC PROJECT WAS THE FOUNDATION

UPON WHICH THE NEW UPLANDERSCLUB WAS BUILT.  IN 1999, THE MEMBERS VOTED TO CHANGE THE NAME

OF THE CLUB TOUPLANDERS CLUB.  IN 2003, THE BYLAWS WERE CHANGED TO OFFER MEMBERSHIP TO ALL

RESIDENTS OF UPLAND AND SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES.

UPLANDERS CLUBFLOURISHES AS A SOCIAL CLUB AND HOSTS AN ANNUAL FUNDRAISER WITH NET PROFITS BENEFITTING A CHOSEN CHARITY IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY.  THE MANY COMMENTS ON THE WARMTH AND FRIENDLINESS OF OUR OUR MEMBERS HAVE BEEN INSTRUMENTAL TO OUR CONTINUED GROWTH.
